Whether we like it or not every country is known for its little quirks. Australia, for instance, is the epitome of beach-bronzed babes lazing about on golden yellow sand: beer in one hand, Akubra hat protecting us from the scorching sun. Britons are known for their stuffiness, Swedes for their thrill at being nude, Asians for their studious nature and Arabs for their hot-temperedness.

They say that ''eyes are the windows to the soul'' but when it comes to Croatians and the passionate way we live life, even a blind man could read us like an open book - by listening to our music. Without a doubt, music is an integral part of a Croatian's identity and over the years numerous songs have entered the realm of cult status. Ten, twenty, even thirty years on the same catchy tunes are still been played at dances, concerts and sung whenever gallons of wine leads to hearts been poured out...

Still 'on tour', I'm now at my aunt and uncle's 'vikendice' - mind you it's bigger than their Zagreb home in Ravnice. I arrived yesterday evening, met at the railway station four kilometres away by Teta Ivanka and Tetak Cedo in their trusty old Skoda hatchback; we bought some supplies at the Konzum Supermarket on our way to the 'vikendice'. I even snaffled a short-sleeved cotton shirt for 30 kuna (that's less than $10) - what a bargain! Before I left Australia I didn't expect the weather to be so warm and muggy in Croatia.

If you are Croatian there is a good chance you have never (a) opened an umbrella inside the house out of fear of evil lurking round the corner, or (b) stepped over a person laying on the floor without jumping straight back in case that person really did (somehow) stop growing.
